Welcome to another installment of the Oregon Brewery Running Series Podcast; Inspiring Oregonians to Be Active, Have Fun, and Give Back. We host family-friendly, 5K fun runs that start and end at some of Oregon’s best breweries.
In this episode of the podcast, I chat with my buddy Gleb Velikonov about the joys of thru-hiking. According to Wikipedia.com, Thru-hiking is, “to hike an established end-to-end hiking trail or long-distance trail with continuous footsteps in one direction.” In short, it’s walking a very long distance while carrying everything you need to survive for days at a time.
Gleb and I talk about the physical, mental, and emotional toll this can take on a person, but also the peace and serenity that comes when you’re unplugged from modern comforts.
Gleb was also on the podcast back in 2017, where he and I talked a bit more about endurance events in general. Gleb has done a bunch of marathons and ultra-marathons, and if you want to go back and listen to that one, you’ll learn more about how these activites can really test what you’re made of. Listen here!
To date, Gleb has completed 22+ marathons and six+ ultramarathons. For those not well versed in running lingo, a marathon is 26.2 miles, and an ultramarathon is anything longer than that. Most often, an ultramarathon is 50K, 50 miles, or more. He has also hiked the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT), Appalachian (AT) trail, Arizona Trail, Loowit Trail, parts of the Camino de Portugues in Portugal and Camino de Santiago in Spain, and more. That’s thousands of miles in total!
Gleb is a frequent volunteer at our events. The next time you see him, be sure to ask him about his fascination with Keri Russell, his awesome house parties, Sasquatch Track Club, his dog Blue, or his tourism busienss with rich Russians.
All are Welcome!
We don’t care if you’re a runner, walker, or something else. We just care that you’re active! We often have 10 – 15 participants who walk our events!
